Southend to Southwold!

From Folkestone we went back to Orpington to pick up our new solar panels and batteries. Once we had them it was on to Southend in Essex for a quick stop to visit my brother, sister in law and niece .

We arrived around lunch time and the weather was still very humid although cloudy and the temperature had dropped a bit.

My sister in law had a bit of a migraine due to the hot weather probably so she didn’t come out to lunch. We went to a nice place in Leigh on sea.

After lunch we started to go for a walk down to the coast for ice cream when suddenly the rain came! We did a quick turn around back to the cafe for coffee instead! I managed a selfie of all of us in the rain! Look at Izzy’s glasses!

We said goodbye to Izzy then headed back to Michael and Marion’s for a couple of hours before deciding where to go next! Nice dilemma to have!

Suffolk and Norfolk! Easy journey from Southend and we could get as far as Suffolk initially.

We ended up spending the first night in a small village tucked up in a quiet country lane near a pub but out the way. We were basically running out of options and it was almost getting dark!

Well it worked out fine, we were up early and on our way to Southwold. We had been there before but a while back, we remembered it being a nice place.

We arrived early around 7.30am to a car park on the outskirts of town where we managed to get a space.

Southwold was very well kept and seemed to have a mix of locals and tourists. Both the beach and the town were had a very ‘laid back’ and ‘looked after’ feel.

The beach was vast and sandy with very distinctive coloured beach huts and a great place to swim of course.

And the obligatory sea photo!

Whilst we were there we went for a walk on the pier. Here’s a photo of both of us on the pier. We hadn’t intentionally dressed in opposite co ordinating colours! We didn’t even realise until we saw that photo!

On the pier in co ordinating clothes!

Southwold pier definitely isn’t you stereotypical seaside pier! No rides or slot machines in sight. Instead there was a very interesting water clock. Well worth a walk on the pier if you are ever in the area.

Some info

What is funny about this is that on the hour and the half hour the 2 men in the middle drop their trousers and ‘pee’ into the toilet! As it says it is powered by the water from the bath! Unique and cleverly done . I think it became a permanent fixture as it was so popular.

As the day went on the car park became so busy that we were actually trapped! I think it was used by tourists in hotels, B and B and Air BNB and also day trippers. Wasn’t a problem but forced us to stay over night and the leave early in the morning before it got too busy again!

It was a bit of a cold grey morning we headed up the coast to our next and final Suffolk stop of Lowestoft. Was a very quick stop really . A quick walk and a photo at Britain’s most easterly point.

Here I am standing at Britain’s most easterly point.

Onto Norfolk which is another post!

  1. Hi Jo, loved the beach huts and the clock, very unique, particularly the clock. I guess Dee doesn’t swim, leaving the cold water to you lol! Seeing you in co-ordinated colours, Les and I often do that and also my sister and I used to do it a lot also. Keep travelling safe
