The first place we headed to in Scottish Borders was St Mary Loch, the largest natural Loch in Scottish Borders. The drive to get there seemed quite long and was some really scary windy single track roads in the middle of nowhere. I hate roads like that and almost wished I hadn’t suggested going there! It was down to me too, as I’m ‘The Navigator’

The last photo shows the view of the loch in the morning. We were parked on the opposite side of the road so this was our view looking out of our window. It was so quiet there too, we really were quite isolated.
We began to feel a little ‘loched out’ so we decided it was time to head to the coast.
This actually involved going back into England briefly and then back into Scotland again. We headed first of all to Berwick Upon Tweed which is actually the most northerly town in England, we did plan on stopping to have a wander round but sadly we did not manage to find anywhere to park. We drove up the coast and back into Scotland before stopping for a couple of nights at North Berwick which is just outside Scottish Borders in East Lothian.

We arrived in North Berwick late afternoon and we went for a walk. The tide was out and it looked like there was a tidal pool. It actually turned out to be a children’s boating lake and not very deep or good for swimming. Luckily I found this out before attempting to swim in it. Always good to get local information whenever possible .
We had a walk around the town and it did have a very good feel to it . Dee’s cousin Andy and his wife Julie had told us that they loved this place and we could see why.
It was the following morning before I went for a swim. We went for a walk early in the morning and met some swimmers who told us the best place to enter the water, again always good to get some local knowledge.
When I did go in a little later I followed some other swimmers in. They weren’t as friendly as I hoped, but they didn’t seem to mind. The sea was a little choppy so it was wave jumping rather than actual swimming.
It was so good to be back in the sea! To taste the salt and feel it on my skin! Don’t get me wrong I love swimming in the lakes and lochs but if I had to choose then I choose the sea! I think it’s just what you get used to.

It definitely felt colder than the lochs which surprised me a little but I didn’t mind at all. It was so good.
After 2 nights in North Berwick it was time to go and visit the family over in Hamilton. Julie was expecting us in the afternoon sometime . Our next post is Hamilton as you probably guessed .

Love that coastline. My other half is from Edinburgh and have been up many times over the years (on the train) but looking forward to taking my van next time we head up there!
