Costa Blanca to Algerciras

Valencia

Sadly we realised that the leisure batteries in our van were not what we had been told they were when we bought the van!

We had been told they were gel batteries which is what we had in our big van and they worked really well off grid. We couldn’t understand why we kept waking up without power!

It turned out we had really basic lead acid starter batteries ! We should have checked! Lesson learned! If you are buying a van please make sure you check properly.

In Valencia we found a company that were able to upgrade our batteries to AGM batteries which are similar to gel. We would have liked lithium but our controller would not have worked with them as not powerful enough. It was a good compromise to see us through. It definitely made a difference.

We stayed at the same park up on the beach where we’d stayed back in January. Here is the sunrise.

From Valencia we headed to a campsite because Dee needed to get our new batteries fitted and hook up to the electric .

The campsite was near a beach, it was still in the district of Valencia.

I wandered to the beach on my own and it was pretty deserted and sadly I don’t think it was just because of the time of year. As you can see the “boat” that may once have been a restaurant or bar is pretty much deserted and full of graffiti.

The sea was lush, I was so glad to get in it even though it was colder than I thought it would be

It is a fabulous city.

Moraira

We actually went back to Moraira so I could have a haircut again.

I had to wait a day for a haircut so I got to have a swim and soak in the lovely Moraira again. It really is a special place and definitely worth visiting if you are in the area.

Here I am with the new haircut, once again I was really happy with it.

La Zenia

After getting my hair cut we left Moraira and headed to La Zenia. We met up with a fellow van lifer Richard and went out for some food and drinks.

We stayed over night overlooking the sea and in the morning we moved closer to a beach he knew. We didn’t stay very long as Dee wanted to try and work in the van and we needed somewhere a bit quieter.

Alcazares

We actually found a nice secluded spot off the main road at Alcazares. There was just us and a Dutch couple. I sat in the sun chatting and drinking beer whilst Dee worked on the van.

It was just as we remembered it. Very chilled, a really lovely beach and waking up with the sea right there to swim in and complete with beautiful sunsets.

It was so lovely and we could easily have stayed longer there but we realised it was 19th Dec and we were planning to be in Morocco for Christmas! Reluctantly we decided to leave the following morning .

La Cala de Mijas

We were looking at the possibility of adding more solar. Someone recommended talking to a Polish guy who works from an aire at Cala De Mijas, so we decided to head over and talk to him.

The aire was very busy when we arrived early evening and also very “English!” Not really our thing! We went for a walk and discovered the whole place was very “English!” . We went to a bar and the girl serving was “English” except she wasn’t! She was born in Spain to English parents.

In the morning the guy had a look at our solar set up. He couldn’t really help and Dee wasn’t happy with his suggestions so time to move on. This turned out to be a good decision as we later upgraded our whole system .

Punta Mala

For the next 2 nights we stayed at a really nice beach park up at Punta Mala, near Gibraltar and Algerceras. It enabled us to get our ferry tickets for Morocco and we also did a quick trip into Gibraltar which I will save for another post.

Sunset at Punta Mala

We got our ferry tickets for Morocco and were ready to get the ferry on 23rd December to Morocco.

The ferry leaves from Algerciras. This is where our next post will start. We hope you will join us.

  1. so much of your trips are wonderful but as in life there seem to be regular hiccups. Nevermind you always seem to overcome them. Love your hair cut, so good to get a good cutter, particularly when you don’t know them.

    1. Yes there are hic cups in life whatever you do . But yes we always get there in the end .

That was the 2nd time he cut my hair and I went back a 3rd time . I am very fussy and sceptical being a hairdresser myself 😂
