A Brief look at Serbia

After almost 4 weeks in Romania we crossed the border into Serbia. We would have liked to have spent a bit longer in Romania but we were aware of how fast time was ticking and we were meeting friends in France at the beginning of September and it was now close to the 2nd week of August.

We were only planning to stay a few days in Serbia driving through to Bosnia.

We spent our first night at a park up in The Danube where I was able to swim in the morning. It was also close enough to Romania that we were able to use our Romanian SIM card. We were not able to buy a Serbian SIM card until the morning as it was a Sunday.

Golubac Fortress

In the morning we managed to get a SIM card and we headed to Golubac Fortress. Like many things it was actually closed on a Monday, which was a shame . It did look quite impressive from the outside and we weren’t the only people who made the mistake of arriving on a Monday.

Golubac Fortress was a medieval fortified town nestled on the banks of the Danube River on the south side. It dates back to the 14th century. Its striking location and well-preserved architecture, including it’s 10 towers make it a popular attraction to visit.

I believe when the site is open you must purchase a ticket that includes entrance to the complex, fortress and parking.

Niš

We moved on to the City of Niš, Serbia’s 3rd largest city which is located in the south. We arrived early evening so decided to wait til the following day to explore.

Niš is one of the oldest places in Serbia and one of the oldest cities in Europe. it is the birthplace of Constantine the Great in 274AD

The main reason we went to Niš was to see Skull Tower (Cele Kukla)

A chilling but fascinating monument constructed by the Ottomans in 1809 using human skulls of Serbian rebels. It served as a grim warning to to anyone wanting to oppose Ottoman rule! Today it is a memorial to Serbian resistance.

It took us about an hour to walk across the city to see Skull Tower. Sadly when we got there there were renovations being done and we were only allowed to stick our heads in the door! We did get the gist of it though!

We didn’t see anything spectacular walking through the city to get there, to us it seemed like an average working city.

We left and headed to the city of Čačak in central Serbia. We didn’t get to look around, we just used it as an overnight stop heading towards the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

We had one last stop very close to the border before leaving Serbia. It was only ever going to be a few days passing through. The last park up was in the trees just on the outskirts of a village about 10 minutes from the border.

Our next post will start in Bosnia and Herzegovina
