Slovenia
We left our lovely lake park up in Croatia and headed into Slovenia. Slovenia is a country I really wanted to see but once again it would mean expensive campsites as it was August and high season. Wild camping is forbidden and there were also toll roads! It is also a very small country so we decided it would be better to come out of season and with our smaller van once we had downsized.
We managed to drive straight through Slovenia and into Italy avoiding any toll roads.
Bibione,Italy
Our first stop in Italy was a beach park up at Babione on the upper Adriatic. We arrived quite late, probably around 18.30pm. It was a free park up and it was very busy. The temperatures since Croatia had been extremely hot, regularly hitting 40 degrees Celsius and over! Too hot even by my standards!
We were very lucky and managed to get a space. The first thing I did as you can imagine was go for a swim. It was so good to be back in the sea again. Much as I enjoyed swimming in lakes, the sea for me is like “going home” .
Next was a pizza and a beer at the beach bar! Both were good, slightly pricey after what we’d been used to but we were right on the beach at a touristy resort in the height of summer in Italy! The place was sadly far too crowded for our liking.
In the morning we met a family in the van next to us who from Italy and were travelling with their children and a rabbit. I got to have a cuddle with the rabbit and go for another swim before we moved on. The main reason we chose to move on was because it was just so crowded! My recommendation would be to go out of season if that’s possible.

We moved on and stayed 1 night at a lake near Mantua. It was nothing special but was ok for 1 night and I was able to in swim in the lake.
We really wanted to go and see the leaning tower of Pisa and visit Lake Garda and Lake Como but due to the high temperatures and the time of year we decided against in. We felt these places would just be too crowded and expensive at this time of year, once again we would have to use campsites which I’d heard in some cases were as much as €100 a night! So we made the decision to head towards France and spend a bit more time there.

Ovada
Our last stop in Italy was just outside the town of Ovada on a free Sosta (Motorhome area) north of Genoa.

We did go into the town at night once the temperature had cooled down a bit! It was quite picturesque and authentic Italian. It is famous for it’s Dolcetto di Ovada wine which sadly we didn’t get to try. The ice cream was nice though!
In the morning it was time to head into France. Our first stop in France is Collobrières, we hope you’ll be joining us.

Europe in the high season is a no go, as you found out, and the prices are off the wall!! Too bad you didn’t get to say longer, but I bet the ice cream was delicious 😋
